An Illinois state legislator has proposed a designated state holiday to honor the birth of President Barack Obama.
Rep. André M. Thapedi filed the bill last week with three other state lawmakers, that would designate August 4 as a legal holiday, "on which to hold appropriate exercises in commemoration of him."
The bill amends "The State Commemorative Dates Act."
If the date fell on a weekend, the following Monday would act as the state-approved holiday, dubbed "Barack Obama's Birthday." It would join the ranks of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, Lincoln's birthday, President's Day, Memorial Day and other designated holidays.
The bill was referred to the Rules Committee on Friday for further review.

CHICAGO - An Illinois lawmaker has introduced a bill that would recognize President Barack Obama's birthday as a State Holiday.
In a news release, State Representative Andre Thapedi (D - Chicago) says legislation that would make President Obama's birthday a State Holiday will be considered by the Illinois House.  Representative Thapedi also says that other states recognize former Presidents' birthdays, such as Texas, Missouri, Alabama, and California, and that President Obama's adopted home state should recognize his accomplishments.
In Illinois, schools and State agencies that are ordinarily open must close on days that are designated as legal state holidays.  Banks may also opt to close on these days.
Representative Thapedi serves the 32nd District of Illinois.  For more information, click here.
